Digital Revolution in Maritime Safety

Image
Are you prepared for the digital revolution? Ready or not, the shipping industry is sailing steadily towards a more digital era. In his opening speech at a 2020 webinar, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim stressed that digitalisation is set to be key to the industry’s recovery from the Covid 19 pandemic. He called upon the shipping sector to make the most of the opportunities presented by digitalisation, embracing its advantages as we navigate challenging times. Mr Lim said “IMO is working to ensure shipping can embrace the digital revolution – while ensuring safety, boosting environmental protection and managing cybersecurity risks.” Many shipping companies still have a way to go when it comes to digitalisation of everyday processes, but most of us agree that Mr Lim has a good point. There’s never been a better time to embrace digitalisation in the shipping industry. Take the guesswork out of your data pr...

Ensuring your company maintains its safety standards

Image
For every shipping company in the industry, keeping our crews safe comes before everything else. Nothing is more important than getting those who work for us home safely. When it comes to working at sea, that means we cannot afford to miss risks that could lead to an incident. There have been 24,000 incidents at sea over the last 10 years, so it’s crucial that we continue to work together to maintain and improve our safety standards. As an industry and as individual companies, we need to continue working to stay one step ahead of risks. Incident numbers may be heading slowly in the right direction, but we know that just one catastrophic incident at sea can cost lives. Our sole aim is to eliminate all avoidable incidents from our seas. That means working with our subscribers to spot hidden risks, avoid incidents and keep those safety standards rising. How your data can protect your crew Every crew member deserves to feel safe when they’re working at s...

The impact of Covid on maritime safety

Image
Covid 19 has impacted the entire maritime industry over the past year. The challenges of living through a pandemic have caused every one of us stress and fatigue as we try to operate safely and effectively. Now, research has shown that many crew members are struggling under the unique pressures of dealing with life at sea in a world dominated by Covid. In late 2020, The Mission to Seafarers published the latest results of their crew survey, The Happiness Index. The survey is open to all men and women who work at sea and asks ten direct questions to check the contentment of crew members every quarter. The survey’s questions cover everything from mental health, to family life and day to day working life. Unsurprisingly, the latest results indicated that Covid is taking a worrying toll on our crews. Crew members are facing fatigue One of the biggest issues facing crews is fatigue. Covid has led...
